Your #2 priority at every interview is…

By on June 21, 2015

Your #1 priority at every interview is to ace it and get that job.

Your #2 priority is to come up with reasons to stay in touch and build a relationship. That way, even if you don’t get the job this time, you’ll create yourself an “insider” who can later on recommend you and help you land more interviews.

While upsetting, the rejections can still give you an opportunity to form relationships. This could mean the difference between getting almost no interviews to getting interviewed for almost every position applied.

This is what happens when you build a network of insider contacts. Sometimes, your industry is smaller than you think, and when hiring managers speak to other hiring managers, they might mention things like:

“Bob? He was a pretty strong candidate. You should interview him.

This is almost like “automatic” networking, and it certainly can bring more opportunities your way. All you have to do to get the ball rolling, is ask for something like: “Would it be OK for me to follow up with you in a few months or bounce some ideas off you?”
